The Role
The Tax Resolution Analyst (Tax Amendments) is responsible for resolving complex federal, state, and local payroll tax discrepancies, with a primary focus on preparing, submitting, and auditing amended payroll tax returns. This role requires deep technical knowledge of payroll tax laws, strong analytical skills to audit historical payroll records, and direct experience working with government tax agencies (IRS and state/local tax authorities) to clear tax notices, abate penalties, and reconcile payroll tax accounts.
What You’ll Do
Prepare, review, and file federal, state, and local amended tax returns (e.g., Form 941-X, Form 940-X, W-2c, state quarterly amended returns, and local tax reconciliations).
Recalculate historical taxable wages, tax withholdings, and employer contributions to ensure proper compliance and accurate adjustment calculations.
Reconcile gross-to-net payroll data against quarterly and annual tax filings to pinpoint discrepancies.
Investigate, track, and resolve tax notices, penalty assessments, and tracer letters from federal, state, and local jurisdictions.
Communicate directly with tax agency representatives to discuss agency adjustments, secure penalty abatements, and negotiate resolution timelines.
Perform root-cause analysis on tax errors to prevent recurring agency notices and compliance issues.
Maintain detailed documentation and audit trails for all filed amendments and tax correspondence.
Stay current on changing federal, state, and local payroll tax legislation affecting amendments and filing guidelines.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
What You Bring
Hands-on experience navigating IRS e-services and state government tax portals.
Exceptional attention to detail, strong problem-solving capabilities, and clear written/verbal communication skills for agency negotiations.
Adaptable and comfortable operating in a fast-paced, startup-like environment.
Team-oriented, resilient, proactive and solutions-focused.
Customer-service mindset: clear communication, patience, and professionalism when working with stakeholders.
Ability to manage multiple requests and prioritize effectively.
Must be highly organized, dependable and self-disciplined with a strong work ethic.
Solid analytical skills, ability to learn at a fast pace.
Education and Experience
3–5 years of dedicated experience in payroll tax processing, payroll auditing, or payroll tax resolution, with demonstrated expertise in filing multi-state tax amendments (Form 941-X, W-2c, etc.).
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or equivalent experience.
Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) preferred.
